Porifera: Sponges!
Defining Characteristics
- Specialized cells that don't work together
- have not change drastically since they first evolved
- spicules between their cell layers for structural support
- collagen material - spongin
- filter feeds for nutrition
- reproduces asexually (budding in ideal conditions) and sexually (internal fertilization with larva, sperm, and egg)
- water is required for respiration, circulation, excretion, feeding, and reproducing!
Lab results and analysis
Analysis
1. Water enters the sponge through the ostrum on the sides and out through the osculum on the top of the sponge. The collar cells use their flagella to cause the water movement through the sponge.
2. Water is required for obtaining nutrients (filter feeding), reproduction, respiration, circulation, and excretion
3. Asexual: in great condition, sponge creates identical buds via gemmules. Sexual: sperm enters sponge via ostrum and fertilizes egg within the sponge
4. Spicules and collagen material called spongin
