An Eggy Experiment
The purpose of this experiment was to find the best post-workout drink. We dissolved the shells of four eggs in vinegar in order to expose the membrane, then soaked the eggs in different liquids (water, 7-UP, Powerade, chocolate milk) to find which one would be the closest to an isotonic state, meaning the best post-workout drink. In this experiment, the eggs were representations of single cells.
The eggs that were soaked in water, vinegar, and Powerade ended up being hypertonic to their solution. This is due to the higher concentration of solute in the the solution compared to the egg. This caused all three of the eggs to increase in size and mass. More solution moved into the egg than out, causing it to become lysed. These conditions are not ideal for animal cells, especially after a workout, making them not the preferred post workout drink.
Our results showed that chocolate milk is the best drink to have after a workout. The results showed that the egg soaked in chocolate milk had the least bit of changes in it mass, and size. This tells me that the [solute] was the closest to being equal inside and outside the egg.
What I learned from this experiment was that we, as humans, want our cells to be in an isotonic state, and that means that we don't want there to be changes to our cells, such as changes in their size or mass. After working out, we want to have our cells to have an equal amount of solute inside and outside our cells, and that is best achieved through chocolate milk rather than water, 7-UP, or Powerade.
