In osmosis, animal and plant cells have a different normal state. For animal cells, they prefer to be isotonic, but for plant cell, they have more support when they are hypotonic, or turgid. When an animal cell is hypotonic, it is considered lysed, and may burst due to water moving into the cell in order to equalize the [solute]. A plant cell in an isotonic state is considered flaccid, because there isn't enough water in the cell. It is bad for both a plant cell and an animal cell to be in an hypertonic state because of the lack of water in the cell. An animal cell in a hypertonic state is shrivelled and a plant cell is plasmolyzed.
