Algae, Bryophyta & Pteridophyta Lab
Purpose: to identify the structures located on various species of Bryophytes and Pteridophyes.
Materials: various microscope slides, microscopes, blank paper.
Method: visit each microscope and view and draw the plant specimen, add any appropriate labels.

Analysis:
1. I viewed Chlamydomonas, volvox, and spirogyra. Chlamydomonas appeared to be unicellular, there were single circles that were not surrounded by other cells. Volvox looked like little circles contained inside a larger circle. These cells were colonial. The spirogyra were arranged in a line (long filaments), indicating that they are colonial. I knew what category each specimen belonged to by comparing the microscope slides to the descriptions and images in my notes.
2. The antheridium is the male gametophyte. Its job is to create and carry sterile cells. The archegonium is the female gametophyte. Its job is to create and contain the eggs or ovam. When the egg becomes fertilized by the sperm, the archegonium hosts the fertilized cell as it grows into an embryo.

4. The prothallus is the gametophyte of ferns (Pteridophytes). It contains both the antheridium as well as the archegonium. Since the prothallus has both the anteridium as well as the archegonium, it is considered monoecious. It is heart-shaped and produces gametes.
